Jonathan Majors is on the brink of a significant career leap with the upcoming release of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” Portraying Kang the Conqueror, the formidable new antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Majors’ storyline is set to extend through at least 2025’s “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” However, Majors recently disclosed in an interview with Vanity Fair that his journey with Marvel could have been cut short after an unconventional start – he walked out of his initial general meeting with the studio.

In Majors’ words, “I hope this doesn’t bite me in the ass, but I walked out of my Marvel general [meeting].” Reflecting on the past, he explained, “This was a long time ago. I had just gotten out of drama school and I’m running around town, and I’m sitting in the office. I grew up in a very particular way, and I don’t want to waste nobody’s time. So I got in there, and they’re just busy. And I was like, ‘I’m supposed to be here, right?’ It got long, and I went, ‘I’m just going to go. It’s cool. I’ll just go.'”

“I got to the door, but then they said [casting director] Sarah Finn was going to come,” Majors recounted. “We got in the room and we chatted. We were having this great conversation. I think it was three years later that we had the Kang chat. And there’s no trepidation now, especially because of who Kang is. When I said yes, we got the whole picture, and what is being laid out is cohesive.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has pointed to Majors’ performance in “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” as the catalyst for the studio’s interest in the actor. Fortunately, Majors is receiving acclaim for his debut as Kang in “Quantumania.” Feige shared with Entertainment Weekly that appreciation for Majors started immediately during Marvel’s testing phase for the film.
“In the early stages of ‘Quantumania’ [test screenings], Jonathan began to stand out significantly,” Marvel Studios’ head continued. “He’s the highest-testing villain we’ve ever had in any of our friends and family screenings. That’s truly remarkable given the nature of a movie like this. Even before the effects were in place, Jonathan’s performance was its own spectacle. He was impactful from the very start.”

Kang made his Marvel debut in “Loki” on Disney+, albeit as a variant of the character, distinct from the version audiences will encounter in “Quantumania.”
Feige remarked, “It’s always one of the exciting gambles we take at Marvel, announcing, ‘Hey, we’re going to make multiple movies around this character, and we’re going to start before the audience has even had a chance to meet him.’ We wholeheartedly commit to these ideas and casting choices. The conclusion of ‘Loki’ Season 1 was a significant relief. People truly seem to be embracing Kang. Even before his appearance in the movie, audiences are chanting ‘Kang!’ when Jonathan appears on talk shows.”
“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is set to hit theaters on February 17, presented by Disney.
