What Happened In Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 1 (And What’s the Story of Part 2)?
It’s been a considerable journey for Ichigo Kurosaki, the high school student from Karakura Town who became a Substitute Shinigami. Starting with his fateful encounter with Kuchiki Rukia, Ichigo has faced a multitude of challenges, battling Hollows, other Shinigami, Bounts (Vampires), Arrancars, and Fullbringers, each with their unique abilities. His pivotal moment came when he saved the Soul Society by defeating Sōsuke Aizen at the end of the Arrancar arc, although it came at the cost of losing his own powers. Fortunately, he regains them later in the Fullbringer storyline, a few months before the Thousand-Year Blood War saga.
During the first arc of Bleach, Uryū Ishida hinted at a devastating war between the Shinigami and the Quincy clan, where the Quincy were almost entirely wiped out two centuries ago. This historical conflict resurfaces in the TYBW arc as the remaining Quincy, now led by their awakened King, Yhwach, launch an all-out war against the Soul Society.
Yhwach is an immensely powerful being, capable of bestowing unique abilities on his followers, earning him the title of a God King. He was defeated a thousand years ago by Captain Genryusai Yamamoto and his Lieutenant, Chōjirō Sasakibe, leading to his long slumber. Upon awakening, Yhwach and the Quincy wage a brutal attack, utilizing devices to steal Bankai, the Shinigami’s ultimate offensive power. This leads to the deaths of many, including Head Captain Yamamoto, and the theft of Bankai from several powerful captains.
The Quincy eventually retreat after Yamamoto’s demise, leaving the Soul Society in ruins. Towards the conclusion of TYBW Part 1, Ichigo makes significant progress, discovering his true self, finding his genuine Zanpakutō, and reaching another level of his Bankai. On the other side, Uryū Ishida, Ichigo’s old friend and rival, has aligned himself as Yhwach’s successor, setting the stage for their inevitable confrontation in Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2. The battle ahead promises to be nothing short of epic.
