Grylls, acknowledging Cooper’s wilder years, remarked, “You certainly had some adventurous times,” prompting Cooper to clarify, “True, but in terms of alcohol and drugs, yes. However, that was unrelated to fame.”
“I consider myself fortunate,” Cooper continued. “I embarked on the journey of sobriety at the age of 29, and it has been 19 years since then. I’ve been truly fortunate.”
Reflecting on his past struggles with substance abuse, Cooper shared how those experiences enriched his portrayal of Jackson Maine in the 2018 film “A Star Is Born,” a project he directed and starred in alongside Lady Gaga.
“It allowed me to really delve into the character,” he explained regarding the musical drama. “Thankfully, I was in a place in my life where I was comfortable with all of that, enabling me to fully immerse myself.”

In “A Star Is Born,” an iteration of the 1937 romantic classic with earlier remakes in 1954 and 1976, Cooper depicts a rock star grappling with addiction.
“I’ve been fortunate with the roles I’ve taken on,” Cooper expressed. “It’s been a genuine blessing. I hope to continue this journey.”
The film “A Star Is Born” garnered eight Oscar nominations, securing one Academy Award for the Cooper-Gaga duo’s “Shallow” in the Best Original Song category.
Cooper’s upcoming project is the biographical romance “Maestro,” centered around the legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein. In addition to portraying Bernstein, Cooper directed the film, scheduled to premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2 and serve as the spotlight gala film at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 2. Following a limited theatrical release starting Nov. 22, “Maestro” is set to stream on Netflix from Dec. 20.
