Paramount is not ready to bid farewell to its record-breaking hit series, Yellowstone, just yet. Although Taylor Sheridan plans to conclude the main series with Season 5 Part 2 this year, he’s gearing up to offer fans a fresh chapter in the Yellowstone saga through a spinoff starring none other than Matthew McConaughey. The spinoff was greenlit by the company in April, and while it’s still in its early development stages, Sheridan shared some intriguing insights about it in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Sheridan recognized McConaughey as an excellent addition to the Yellowstone universe, alongside the legendary Kevin Costner. “He seems like a natural fit,” Sheridan expressed to THR. The idea of McConaughey joining the Yellowstone world isn’t a new one for Sheridan; in fact, there had been discussions and speculations about his involvement even before McConaughey had seen the series. According to Sheridan, they had exchanged ideas over the years, and once McConaughey immersed himself in Yellowstone and responded positively to it, the decision to collaborate was a natural progression.

While this spinoff may follow Yellowstone, it’s expected to introduce new characters rather than relying heavily on the ones established in the parent series over its four and a half seasons. Although Sheridan didn’t rule out the possibility of a cameo appearance here and there, he envisions this spinoff to be similar to his prequel series, 1883 and 1923, which can be appreciated independently of the main series. Sheridan’s concept of a spinoff aligns with his approach to prequels, suggesting that it will bring a fresh perspective to the world of Yellowstone. The core themes of the series, according to Sheridan, will remain intact, only in a different setting with new faces and unique challenges. “There are numerous places where a traditional way of life that has endured for 150 years clashes with the modern world, but the challenges vary significantly. There are many locations where we can tell this story.”

Once again, Sheridan emphasizes that this new spinoff won’t be revealed anytime in the near future. Currently, he has only the broadest of story outlines in mind, and there’s room for plenty of evolution and development between now and the eventual release. In the meantime, Sheridan has a packed schedule with the final episodes of Yellowstone, a second season of 1923 featuring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, and a Bass Reeves spinoff with David Oyelowo, among other projects. Let’s not forget his various other creative endeavors beyond the Yellowstone universe, including his upcoming spy series, Special Ops: Lioness, starring Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman.
Keep an eye on Collider for the latest updates on the McConaughey Yellowstone spinoff as it takes shape. Yellowstone fans are eagerly anticipating the second part of Season 5, which will ultimately conclude the main series later this year. In the meantime, you can catch up on the series via Peacock, and be sure to check out the Season 5 trailer below.”
