On Thursday, Terry addressed his absence from the show in a video shared on his Instagram account. Although he did not explicitly refer to the series, Variety confirmed that he was referring to “The Morning Show.” In the video, Terry expressed disappointment over not appearing in the upcoming season and thanked fans for making a splash with his role as a black gay host.
“I really wanted to come here and confirm with you that no, you won’t be seeing that character this season. I’m disappointed in that too, but I’m really grateful that there are people who have reached out and feel seen through that role and storytelling,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry, especially in the ongoing discussions about pay equity.
In the video’s caption, Terry added: “We need more complex and diverse characters on screen, so it’s discouraging to see a character we love disappear. But rest assured, There’s more to come! My creative journey is ongoing and purposeful. Thank you.” to all the fans who have reached out.”
Terry’s representative declined to comment further due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Apple TV+ has not yet responded to Variety’s request for comment on his departure.
Season 3 of “The Morning Show,” led by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, has introduced new cast members Jon Hamm and Nicole Beharie and is focusing on discussions about race in the workplace. However, as Variety’s television critic Alison Herman noted in her review, the show continues to have flaws. The departure of the character Desean Terry shifted responsibility for addressing racism to other members of the cast, which had grown in size. This change also affected the show’s focus on marginalized workers, as storylines addressing these issues seemed to lack a satisfying conclusion by the end of the season.
The series has already been renewed for Season 4.
