The idea for a Mexican-inspired album was a dream inspired by her grandparents’ wishes. She recalled their encouragement to explore Mexican musical styles, saying, “My grandparents would always tell me, ‘Mija, I’d love to hear you with a mariachi or with a banda.’ And my grandma would always make fun of me because I would be rapping.”
Becky G’s journey through the music industry led her from pop to reggaeton, but the stars aligned when she met producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera. Barrera, the most-nominated person at the 2023 Latin Grammys, has played a pivotal role in bridging Mexican and American musical styles. The album features collaborations with emerging Mexican-American artists like Peso Pluma, Ivan Cornejo, Yahritza Y Su Esencia, DannyLux, and Angela Aguilar, contributing to a fresh and exciting sound.
Becky G expressed her gratitude for the new wave of artists that is paving the way for a blend of traditions and contemporary flair. She stated, “There’s a new wave of artists paving the way, and I’m so thankful for that because now I am experiencing this collective embrace. Not just of our traditions, but of our own very specific flairs.”
The album’s catalyst came two years ago when Becky G lost her first grandparent, her abuelito Miguel. She explained, “I think losing him and then gaining him as a guardian angel just kind of felt like a sign… This record is as serendipitous as things can get, it’s a project that is so close to my heart.”
“Esquinas” is a departure from Becky G’s previous work, showcasing a different side of her voice and a fusion of regional-inspired sounds with a contemporary twist. The album includes covers of classic songs, some written and sung by influential figures like Antonio Aguilar, adding depth and history to the project.
