The narrative follows 15-year-old Bella (Lola Tung), who spends each summer at a beach house with her mother, older brother Steven, and her mother’s best friend’s family—the Fishers. Throughout the summers, Belly has harbored a crush on Conrad (Christopher Briney), the eldest Fisher son, though he has always regarded her as a little sister. The first season, mirroring the initial book of the trilogy, unfolds during the summer of Belly’s 16th birthday, when Conrad starts reciprocating her deepening feelings.
