Adapted from David Grann’s non-fiction novel of the same name, the story delves into the disturbing series of murders targeting the Osage people in Oklahoma during the 1920s. Scorsese’s film, like Grann’s book, explores the love story between Enerest Burkhart (DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Gladstone), intertwined with the vast wealth of a Native American nation.
The official synopsis unfolds as follows: “At the dawn of the 20th century, the discovery of oil brought immense wealth to the Osage Nation, catapulting them into sudden affluence as some of the wealthiest individuals globally. However, this prosperity became a magnet for opportunistic outsiders who, through manipulation, extortion, and theft, sought to drain the Osage fortune before resorting to heinous acts of murder. Rooted in actual events, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ emerges as an expansive western crime saga, weaving the threads of genuine love with the fabric of unspeakable betrayal.”
The cast of “Killers of the Flower Moon” also features Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion, William Belleau, Louis Cancelmi, Tatanka Means, Michael Abbot Jr., Pat Healy, Scott Shepard, Jason Isbell, and Sturgill Simpson.
Having its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the film was described by Variety film critic Peter Debruge as “a substantial yet challenging true-crime narrative” in his review. Clayton Davis, Variety’s senior awards editor, emphasized that “Flower Moon” instantly positioned itself as an Oscar contender, particularly lauding Lily Gladstone’s “uncompromising portrayal.”
“Killers of the Flower Moon” was a collaborative effort involving Imperative Entertainment, Sikelia Productions, and Appian Way. Martin Scorsese serves as the producer alongside Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, and Daniel Lupi. Noteworthy executive producers include Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Adam Sommer, Marianne Bower, Lisa Frechette, John Atwood, Shea Kammer, and Niels Juul.
