‘Missing’ Ending Explained: The TikTok Sleuths Couldn’t Have Been More Wrong

September 18, 2023 September 18, 2023 admin

If there ever was a film crafted to playfully mock digital detectives who scrutinize every minute detail and the very essence of unraveling the intricacies behind the scenes, it would undoubtedly be “Missing.” In a rather ironic twist, explaining the film’s revelations can come across as amusingly simple in hindsight, underscoring the movie’s overarching message. “Missing” serves as an unexpected sequel to the 2018 film “Searching,” treading a somewhat familiar narrative path but offering a fresh perspective that ultimately dispels the myriad convoluted theories in favor of a more straightforward yet disquieting truth. I must emphasize that this analysis will divulge every significant plot element of the film. So, if you haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, I recommend bookmarking this page and returning after you’ve seen it. If you’re ready, let’s delve headfirst into the aftermath of the chaos and dissect what it all signifies.

The narrative revolves around June (Storm Reid), whose mother Grace (Nia Long) seemingly vanishes during a trip to Colombia with her new boyfriend, Kevin (Ken Leung). Initially, their journey appeared blissful until an online video reveals their abduction from a street in Colombia. While stuck in Los Angeles during this ordeal, June utilizes various online tools to piece together the puzzle of her mother’s disappearance. In her quest for answers, she stumbles upon a shocking revelation: the truth behind her mother’s vanishing act hits closer to home than she could have ever imagined. Contrary to what June had been told about her father, Tim Griffin (James), who was supposedly deceased since her early childhood, he had actually been incarcerated for years, serving time for abusing Grace and drug-related offenses. Grace had spirited June away to Los Angeles to make a fresh start. However, James was eventually released from prison and embarked on a quest to track them down. This is where the plot takes a twist, albeit with an underlying simplicity.

Missing

In essence, it was James who orchestrated Kevin’s proximity to Grace in the first place. Then, on the day they were supposed to head to the airport, they orchestrated a switcheroo. James posed as their driver, facilitating Grace’s abduction. To conceal their tracks, he hired a woman who bore a striking resemblance to Grace to accompany Kevin on the trip. This would enable her supposedly devoted boyfriend to continue sending photos of their joyful escapades back home, thus postponing any suspicions. Kevin’s blunder occurred when he inadvertently sent a “live photo” that exposed the ruse, leading June to realize she needed to scrutinize her immediate surroundings more closely. Armed with limited information, as Kevin met his demise in a police raid after being abandoned by James, June uncovered signs that her computer was under surveillance. She also unearthed surveillance footage showing her mother confined in a shed near their former residence. It became unmistakably clear that only one person could be responsible for this nightmarish ordeal, which seemed to worsen at every turn.

Right as June teetered on the brink of uncovering James’s identity, he made a chilling appearance at her doorstep and promptly abducted her. He transported her back to the remote house where Grace was held captive. Although the situation grew increasingly dire, mother and daughter joined forces to confront their common enemy. In a clever maneuver that also served as a callback to a recurring joke about Grace’s penchant for overusing Siri, June managed to discreetly alert the police to their location, even while confined to a room. While “Missing” may not be a profound treatise by any stretch, primarily maintaining its status as a thriller, there’s a certain significance in how it all unravels. Amid the cacophony of wild, far-fetched theories circulating on the internet, with outlandish speculations running amok, only June managed to unearth the truth. She emerged as the savior of herself and her mother because everyone else, including law enforcement, was barking up the wrong tree. In a digital age where TikTok pundits were all too eager to exploit her family’s tragedy for viral content, June penetrated a truth that, though painfully commonplace, had eluded everyone else.

While the world was captivated by the notion of an elaborate criminal mastermind orchestrating a convoluted scheme, the stark reality was that a run-of-the-mill abuser had returned to terrorize his family once more. Granted, the film leans heavily into the spectacle of the unfolding drama, occasionally tripping over itself in the process. Nevertheless, the revelation that the labyrinthine misdirections eventually give way to a more horrifying truth is a pointed commentary. It underscores how, amidst the imaginative flights of fancy that turn crimes into sensationalized TV-like dramas, the genuine horrors often have more ordinary origins. To be sure, some narrative leaps are taken to heighten the excitement. Nevertheless, when we peel back the layers, “Missing” offers a stark reminder that the most terrifying truths can emerge when others reduce you to a consumable narrative, all while failing to see the glaring truth right before them.
