As we approach the possible series finale, Ted Lasso is certainly tying up loose ends. One interesting choice was to keep Nate’s redemption and his decision to leave West Ham off-screen, leaving us to ponder the reasons behind it. Similarly, it seems that Keeley Jones had a somewhat underutilized presence in Season 3. However, the season’s most intriguing moment arguably occurred in Episode 11 when Rebecca received an unexpected visit from Bex and Ms. Kakes. This surprise visit might be setting the stage for Rupert’s downfall, a character who has consistently shown himself to be beyond redemption. Although it’s a pivotal plot point, it does leave us wondering if it should have been introduced earlier in the season.
What Does That Rebecca and Bex Scene in ‘Ted Lasso’ Mean?
In the world of Ted Lasso, we first met Bex back in Season 1 when Rebecca discovered her ex-husband was involved with a younger woman who shares her name. It was a rather awkward revelation, especially considering Bex and Rupert had an affair prior to Rebecca’s divorce. Surprisingly, though, Bex doesn’t come across as the villain here. She seems genuinely in love with Rupert and is dedicated to raising their child. Unfortunately, Rupert remains, well, an unpleasant character, and soon enough, he starts eyeing other women.

In Season 3, we’re introduced to Ms. Kakes, Rupert’s new secretary. Rebecca catches Rupert with Ms. Kakes, exposing his infidelity to his new wife. While Rupert’s behavior is certainly condemnable, having an affair is not illegal. So, while Rupert unquestionably remains a sexist and unpleasant figure, his actions so far have mostly skirted the line of legality. However, the surprise visit from Bex and Ms. Kakes in Ted Lasso hints that Rupert might be heading towards a sexual harassment case.
Ms. Kakes mysteriously vanished from the series, and when Rebecca inquired about her to Rupert, he claimed Ms. Kakes was fired due to alleged inappropriate workplace behavior. It’s clearly a cover-up, with Rupert likely trying to hide his affair by firing Ms. Kakes. Nevertheless, if Rupert’s current wife and Ms. Kakes have teamed up, seeking the assistance of the millionaire’s ex-wife, it suggests that something more significant than a mere consensual affair might be lurking behind the scenes. While we’re all eagerly awaiting Rupert’s comeuppance, it’s hard not to wonder why these three women didn’t unite forces much earlier in the season.
Rupert’s Reckoning Shouldn’t Be Rushed
While we can’t say for certain which of Rupert’s reprehensible actions prompted Bex and Ms. Kakes to visit Rebecca, it’s quite reasonable to assume that these three women will unite to expose the billionaire’s toxic behavior. Rupert, as a man in a position of power, undoubtedly exploited his secretary, providing ample grounds to go after this antagonist. Regrettably, time constraints in Ted Lasso prevent this matter from being addressed with the gravity it warrants.
Ted Lasso has a knack for weaving real-world issues into its storytelling, drawing inspiration from the very real problems that plague the sports industry. It wouldn’t be surprising if the show delves into how privileged older white men often believe their wealth entitles them to mistreat women. However, this is an exceptionally sensitive subject that demands careful handling, and that’s precisely where the upcoming episode may fall short. After all, we’re down to just one episode remaining in Season 3 of Ted Lasso, which may well be the series finale. With only one hour left, the writers must juggle an array of storylines.

If Ted Lasso indeed concludes with Season 3, the final episode must serve as a farewell to Ted, resolve whether Richmond wins the championship, bid each individual player a fitting adieu, address Nate’s return to coaching, unveil the outcome of Sam’s struggles against Edwin Akufo, resolve Keeley and Roy’s relationship, and decide on Rebecca’s romantic future. In light of this, how can the show properly explore Rupert’s downfall and the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace? It’s an incredibly tall order. So, either Apple TV+ greenlights another season, deferring some of these plot points, or risk rushing through another crucial topic that warrants more thoughtful treatment.
Earlier in this season, Ted Lasso mishandled Keeley’s leaked intimate video, using it to advance a plotline that had little to do with her character. While the show does lay blame on the hackers who breached Keeley’s privacy rather than the women involved in making the videos, the entire ordeal was resolved in just a couple of episodes. Even though the unauthorized exposure of women’s bodies is a pressing issue, the series seemed to brush past it, moving forward without allowing viewers ample time to grasp the gravity of the situation. As much as we cherish this show, Season 3 seems to grapple with a pacing issue that’s undermining important storylines centered on significant topics. Unfortunately, Keeley’s story sets a troubling precedent for how Ted Lasso might handle Rupert’s predatory behavior.
Rupert stands as Ted Lasso’s primary antagonist, and it’s satisfying to know that he’ll finally face the consequences of his actions. Yet, sexual harassment isn’t an issue the show can simply address in a single episode and claim their duty is fulfilled. Furthermore, for Rebecca and Bex to develop a meaningful bond, they require the necessary time to explore their relationship. It’s disheartening to realize that Ms. Kakes, who didn’t even receive a first name in Ted Lasso, only made a fleeting appearance with mere minutes of screen time. Additionally, Ms. Kakes has reappeared after unsettling encounters with Rupert, yet this is another narrative development that transpired off-screen.
The idea of these three women uniting to confront Rupert and challenge the patriarchy’s power dynamic is a compelling one. However, it’s clear that this plotline was introduced too late in the season, leaving us with little hope that Ted Lasso will treat it with the depth and consideration it deserves.
