The streaming release date, disclosed on Monday morning, deviates from the usual 90-day window. Rob Marshall’s reimagining of the beloved 1989 classic premiered at the end of May, making a splash with an impressive $117.5 million during its opening four-day weekend.

Halle Bailey takes on the lead role of Ariel in the film, portraying the daughter of King Triton (played by Javier Bardem), the sovereign of an ocean realm. Ariel finds herself captivated by a prince (Jonah Hauer-King) from the world above the waves. In her quest to be with him, she strikes a deal with Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), agreeing to surrender her enchanting voice in exchange for a human appearance. Marshall’s rendition of the story revisits many cherished songs from the original film, such as the iconic “Part of Your World” and “Under the Sea.”
Variety film critic Peter Debruge expressed in his review that there’s nothing “little” about Marshall’s “Little Mermaid.” Debruge notes that the film, running nearly an hour longer than the 1989 animated version, is a cinematic sea monster. It dramatically expands both the above- and below-water realms of the Caribbean-set original, introducing additional songs and characters (such as Noma Dumezweni as the Queen) like barnacles to the hull of the ship.
To catch “The Little Mermaid” on streaming, you’ll need to subscribe to Disney+, with plans starting at $9.99/month. Alternatively, you can opt for the Disney Bundle, encompassing Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, available at $12.99/month.
For those who want to revisit the original “The Little Mermaid” and its sequels, they are also accessible on Disney+. Additionally, all the films, including Blu-ray versions, can be rented or purchased on Amazon.
