Halle Bailey takes on the lead role of Ariel in the film, portraying the daughter of King Triton (played by Javier Bardem), the sovereign of an ocean realm. Ariel finds herself captivated by a prince (Jonah Hauer-King) from the world above the waves. In her quest to be with him, she strikes a deal with Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), agreeing to surrender her enchanting voice in exchange for a human appearance. Variety film critic Peter Debruge expressed in his review that there’s nothing “little” about Marshall’s “Little Mermaid.” Debruge notes that the film, running nearly an hour longer than the 1989 animated version, is a cinematic sea monster. It dramatically expands both the above- and below-water realms of the Caribbean-set original, introducing additional songs and characters (such as Noma Dumezweni as the Queen) like barnacles to the hull of the ship.
