Bishop Briggs, like a steadfast river, maintained her consistent presence throughout Season 9 of Fox’s “The Masked Singer.” Her unwavering dedication paid off as she emerged as the champion. Disguised as Medusa, Briggs clinched this season’s top prize, and during Wednesday night’s finale, her true identity was revealed. David Archuleta, unveiled as the Macaw, secured the runner-up position.

Throughout the season, Briggs delivered the most performances among all contestants, solidifying her victory with renditions of “Elastic Heart” by Sia and “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance. Despite acknowledging the challenge of singing under the Medusa costume, Briggs noted that it was a far cry from what she had experienced the previous year.
“When I was on the show, I was six months postpartum,” she recalled. “My most vivid recent memory was performing at Coachella while pregnant, which was such a monumental task. I feel that in comparison, this experience was manageable. Having something as intense as performing in the desert heat while six months pregnant to compare it to really made a huge difference. So, I believe that helped improve my endurance.”
Bishop Briggs, renowned for hits like “Wild Horses” and “River,” recently unveiled her latest single, “Baggage.” She also has an upcoming EP titled “When Everything Went Dark,” set to release next month, followed by a North American tour this fall alongside MisterWives.
Reflecting on her participation in “The Masked Singer,” Briggs expressed her admiration for the show and her curiosity about the opportunity it offered to focus solely on her voice. She described the experience as an adventure, performing under the elaborate costume. She mentioned that at the start of each song, she could see somewhat, but as the performance progressed, her visibility dwindled. However, her primary goal going in was to be as authentic as possible, with the hope that her emotions would shine through her singing.
Briggs faced a close call earlier in the season when she was nearly eliminated, but she was saved by the show’s “Ding Dong Keep It On” bell. When asked to select her favorite performance of the season, she singled out her rendition of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church.” She expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I got to incorporate all the elements I love in my own live performances. I was able to pour my heart into the song, unleash my energy, and I’ve always been a huge fan of Hozier.”
As for the guessing game of Medusa’s identity, panelist Nicole Scherzinger correctly identified Bishop Briggs. Robin Thicke speculated it might be Grimes, while Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed Fergie. Ken Jeong took an unexpected turn with Susan Boyle as his guess.
As for the Macaw, Nicole Scherzinger once again hit the mark with her guess, correctly identifying David Archuleta. Ken Jeong concurred with Scherzinger’s guess. Robin Thicke, however, thought it might be Jason Mraz, while Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg went with Neil Patrick Harris.
Similar to the previous season, “The Masked Singer” adopted the “Champion of Masked Singer” format during the regular season. In each episode, three costumed celebrities performed, but only one emerged as the winner and progressed to the following week’s competition.

A new addition this season was the “Ding Dong Keep It On” twist in the competition. Panelists had the chance to rescue a contestant from imminent elimination using the bell, but this lifeline could only be used three times during the first three rounds. The three saved contestants then engaged in a showdown on a special episode, vying for the opportunity to rejoin the competition, a contest that ultimately included Medusa.
Bishop Briggs as Medusa and David Archuleta as Macaw join Pentatonix as California Roll, Olivia Culpo as UFO, Lou Diamond Phillips as Mantis, Keenan Allen as Gargoyle, Melissa Joan Hart as Lamp, Alicia Witt as Dandelion, Dee Snider as the Doll, Christine Quinn as Scorpio, George Wendt as Moose, Holly Robinson Peete as Fairy, Alexa Bliss as Axolotl, Lele Pons as Jackalope, Malin Akerman as Squirrel, Michael Bolton as the Wolf, Grandmaster Flash as Polar Bear, Debbie Gibson as Night Owl, Howie Mandel as Rock Lobster, Sara Evans as Mustang and Dick Van Dyke as Gnome as the celebrities unmasked this season.
“The Masked Singer” entered Season 9 with 21 contestants include “Mustang,” “Axolotl,” “California Roll,” “Dandelion,” “Moose,” “Gargoyle,” “Jackalope,” “Doll,” Polar Bear,” “Night Owl,” “Rock Lobster,” “Gnome,” “Macaw,” “Squirrel,” “Wolf” and more. Tim Chappel is this season’s costume designer.
The Season 9 contestants “boast a combined 28 Emmy nominations, six Grammy wins, 10 gold albums, four Golden Globe nominations, five medals, 26 books, two Tony Award nominations, five Lifetime Achievement Awards, four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a combined 95,231,000 records sold.” Season nine will introduce all-new themed episodes, including “ABBA Night,” “New York Night,” “DC Superheroes Night,” “Sesame Street Night,” “80s Night,” “Movie Night” and more.
Here were the final two contestants and their performances on night fourteen:
Medusa (BISHOP BRIGGS)
Songs: “Elastic Heart,” by Sia; “Welcome to the Black Parade,” by My Chemical Romance
Panel guesses: Elle Goulding, Fergie, Kesha, Grimes, Lorde, Shirley Manson, Bishop Briggs
Package voiceover:
“I believe those who know me wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see me donning a costume adorned with snakes and exuding an eerie aura. Embracing the role of a mischievous, reptilian enchantress aligns perfectly with my aesthetic. In all honesty, I feel an immense sense of gratitude for having the opportunity to embody such a commanding character. Medusa has almost become a second skin for me. I find myself concerned that I might become so accustomed to it that I won’t want to take it off when I hit the stage on tour. The journey to this point has been a hard-fought battle, and it would mean the world to me to join the ranks of past winners, including the incredible Queen of Hearts, Jewel. This experience is etched into my soul, and I’ll carry it with me always.

I still can’t believe I’ve made it to the finale! It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m filled with gratitude. Yet, deep within me, there’s a burning desire to win. Among all the contestants this season, I had to overcome the toughest challenges to earn my place here tonight. I came close to being sent home, but those obstacles prepared me for this very moment. Regardless of the circumstances, my foremost priority has always been connecting with the people before me. I hope that through my music, they’ll feel less alone. As I think about my son watching this, I hope he’ll grasp Medusa’s message – that we’re capable of embodying numerous facets simultaneously. Even in the face of great loss, there’s still room for joy. And, above all else, it’s a fight worth undertaking. I hope to make him proud.”

Macaw (DAVID ARCHULETA)
Songs: “Hold Back the River,” by James Bay; “All by Myself,” by Eric Carmen
Panel guesses: Zayn Malik, Neil Patrick Harris, Doug Robb of Hoobastank, David Archuleta, Darren Criss
Package voiceover:
“The transformation into the Macaw has been truly exhilarating, as it’s akin to becoming an entirely new persona. Strangely enough, despite being concealed within this costume, it’s allowed me to reveal more of my true self. I can now display the vibrant facets I was hesitant to show before, and I’ve delved deeper into my emotional performances. I must admit, I had my share of anxiety when I first arrived here, uncertain whether I could handle the scrutiny once again, especially with millions watching on TV. Yet, embodying the Macaw has made it an immensely enjoyable experience. And if I were to emerge victorious, it would signify that I can indeed achieve something remarkable. While tonight may mark the end of the Macaw, he will forever reside within me.
At the beginning of this competition, I never imagined I’d come this far. Honestly, I wasn’t even certain if I’d continue singing at all. Few are aware of this, but I suffered a significant injury last year that rendered me voiceless for a full three months. Simultaneously, I was navigating through significant life changes, and I began questioning whether this path was truly meant for me. After taking some time for introspection, I realized there was still a part of me that yearned for the stage, and that I should persist despite all the upheavals. There was a point where I felt utterly alone. However, from this unique perspective, I can now see that I am deserving of love.”
