In the show, Saki brought life to the character Rosie, the proprietress of “Rosie’s Bar.” She assumed the role as the third actor in its portrayal and held the character the longest. Beyond “MAS*H,” her acting career extended to other notable projects, including her role as Dr. Fujimoto in the 1984 film “Splash” alongside Tom Hanks, as well as appearances in “CHiPs” and “History of the World: Part I.”
Born in Japan to a family of gardeners, as revealed on the “MAS*H Matters” podcast with co-star Jeff Maxwell, Eileen Saki expressed that she knew from the age of four that she wanted to be a performer despite facing economic hardships. “We were very poor, and probably my psyche wanted to be somebody else. To have a brighter life and an entertaining life,” she shared.

Her journey led her to secure the role of Rosie in “MASH” after a daring encounter on a Fox lot, where she met Burt Metcalf, the casting director who eventually cast her in the series. Post-“MASH,” Saki inquired with Metcalf about further opportunities, ultimately joining the cast of “History of the World: Part I.”
Surviving lung cancer in 2004, Saki resumed her passion for entertainment and even starred in a 2022 Uber Eats commercial. Jeff Maxwell, known for his role as Private Igor Straminsky, commemorated Saki’s passing on the “MAS*H Matters” podcast, and he penned a heartfelt tribute on the podcast’s Facebook page, saying, “Our sweet Eileen. Our sassy Rosie. She read every email and responded to as many as she could. Our sweet, sweet Eileen. How we love you. How we will miss you.”
Eileen Saki is survived by her husband, Bob.
