Sony Pictures is set to shake up the summer movie season with two highly anticipated releases. The third installment of the “Venom” franchise, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, has been scheduled for a July 12, 2024, premiere. The film currently remains untitled. It marks a departure from the franchise’s previous October openings, with “Venom” in 2018 and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” in 2021. Sony’s decision to release “Venom 3” in July positions it squarely between Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” (July 5, 2024) and Universal’s “Twisters” (July 19, 2024).

Additionally, Sony has locked in a release date for the fourth installment of the “Bad Boys” series, reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The as-yet-untitled sequel is scheduled for release over Father’s Day weekend on June 14, 2024. This places the action-packed tentpole in direct competition with Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”

Sony’s release calendar has witnessed several significant changes, including postponing “Kraven the Hunter” and a “Ghostbusters” sequel to 2024. Notably, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” has been removed from the calendar.
The announcement of “Bad Boys 4” came at the beginning of the year, following the success of “Bad Boys for Life,” the third installment of the beloved action franchise. Released in winter 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted theaters, “Bad Boys for Life” grossed an impressive $426.5 million worldwide. The fourth film will see the return of directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, along with screenwriter Chris Bremner.

The original “Bad Boys” film collected $141 million worldwide, while its 2003 sequel, “Bad Boys II,” raked in $273 million. “Bad Boys for Life” managed to surpass the combined earnings of its predecessors.
As for “Venom 3,” its development was confirmed during CinemaCon in 2022. The franchise, led by Tom Hardy, has had a successful run at the box office. The first “Venom” film grossed an impressive $856 million worldwide, while “Let There Be Carnage” maintained strong performance despite the pandemic, earning $502 million worldwide. Notably, “Let There Be Carnage” debuted with $90 million in the U.S., outperforming “Venom’s” $80 million debut in a non-pandemic landscape.
Tom Hardy played a pivotal role in shaping the story for “Venom 3” alongside collaborator Kelly Marcel. Marcel, who wrote the screenplays for the first two “Venom” movies, is set to step into the director’s chair for the upcoming installment, solidifying her involvement in the tentpole’s creative process.
