Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, the architects of the film’s screenplay, are diligently crafting a stage reinterpretation of the beloved movie. Garner’s performance was complemented by a talented cast that included Mark Ruffalo as the boy next door, Andy Serkis as Garner’s boss, and Judy Greer as her best friend.
The musical rendition, aptly titled “13 Going On 30 The Musical,” is scheduled to make its grand premiere next summer. The production will feature music and lyrics by Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary, known for their work on “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.” Guiding the musical’s direction will be none other than Andy Fickman, who also helmed the original stage adaptation of “Heathers the Musical.”
In an exciting development, Goldsmith and Yuspa are conducting a two-week workshop at the Battersea Arts Centre in London, U.K., next month. In a rare and generous move, four performances from October 25th to 28th will be open to the public.
For those unfamiliar with the heartwarming storyline of “13 Going On 30,” Jennifer Garner portrays Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old girl who yearns to bypass the awkward teenage years and magically awaken as a 30-year-old with an enviable life, apartment, and career. Her 13th birthday wish for this transformation unexpectedly comes true, and she finds herself living her dream as a magazine editor in bustling New York City. However, as Jenna fully immerses herself in her adult life, she begins to realize that it may not be as perfect as it seems, and she has lost sight of what truly matters.

The stage adaptation has been in development for several years and will be brought to life by the theater company Royco, founded by Tom de Keyser and Hamish Greer, known for their work on “Police Cops The Musical.”
Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, reflecting on their enduring creation, shared, “When we poured our middle school pain into the movie ’13 Going on 30,’ we never quite imagined it would stick around to this day as a rom-com parents show their kids, a Halloween costume, a scene in an Ariana Grande music video, and a teen sleepover staple. Now we’re thrilled to be bringing our pain across the pond with ’13 Going on 30 The Musical.'”
They further added, “It’s been endlessly fun working with ROYO, Todd Garner, Revolution Studios, composer/lyricists Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, and director Andy Fickman to reinvent this story for the London stage. We can’t wait for a new generation to grab some Razzles and feel thirty, flirty, and thriving.”
