Producer Alfonso Cuarón expressed his excitement for adapting Frederick Forsyth’s beloved short novel into this heartwarming Christmas tale. He highlighted the collaboration with director Iain Softley, describing it as the perfect match to bring this narrative to life on the big screen.
Cuarón remarked, “John, Iain, and myself have been long-time admirers of the beloved short novel by Frederick Forsyth. I am thrilled that we have been able to jointly share our love of this story.” He went on to say, “Being old friends with Iain, he was the perfect match to bring this beloved narrative to life on film for the first time. After the success of last year’s short, ‘Le Pupille,’ and working with director Alice Rohrwacher, it’s really inspiring to be building out a collection of short films that celebrate the season with such talented filmmakers who each bring their own unique vision and cinematic style.”
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, shared her enthusiasm for this beautifully crafted adaptation, describing it as a Christmas fable that can be enjoyed by families worldwide.
This project marks the second collaboration between Cuarón and Disney+, following the success of last year’s “Le Pupille,” which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Live-Action Short Film.

Iain Softley, the director behind “The Shepherd,” was initially drawn to the project when producer Richard Johns approached him to adapt it from Forsyth’s novella. Softley noted, “I was attracted from the beginning by the story’s many qualities. It is an exquisite, contained Christmas fable, both mysterious and profoundly moving with a couple of unexpected twists. We all hope that this film will touch audiences in the way that it touched us and will be appreciated across many generations and cultures.”
Interestingly, the collaboration with John Travolta began when the filmmakers learned that he had optioned the novella nearly three decades ago with the intention of playing the lead role. Travolta, known for his lifelong passion for aircraft, not only stars in the film but also serves as an executive producer.
In addition to producer Richard Johns, the team behind “The Shepherd” includes Bill Kenwright and Gabriela Rodriguez. Travolta, David Gilbery, Naomi George, and Lila Rawlings are the executive producers, while John Mathieson serves as the director of photography and Anne Chmelewsky provides the film’s musical score.
“The Shepherd” represents another exciting addition to Disney+’s lineup of Christmas fables and showcases the collaborative efforts of a team of talented filmmakers, making it a must-watch this holiday season.
Intrigue and heartwarming heroics take flight on December 1 when “The Shepherd” lands on Disney+. Don’t miss the opportunity to embark on this emotional journey, where the magic of Christmas unfolds amidst the vast, unforgiving expanse of the North Sea.
