The allegations stem from a 2018 lawsuit filed by Charlotte Arnould, a woman whose parents are old friends of Depardieu. While he did not name Arnould explicitly, Depardieu acknowledged the events in question. According to the actor, Arnould had visited his home twice, with the first visit involving her willingly entering his bedroom. She later alleged rape. The second visit, in which she wished to sing songs by Barbara at the Cirque d’Hiver, ended in a refusal by Depardieu and a subsequent complaint.

Depardieu has been under indictment in this case since December 2020, but no custodial measures have been imposed. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Depardieu has continued to secure high-profile film projects and perform his music show, “Depardieu Chante Barbara.”
However, his career took a significant hit in April when Mediapart published a bombshell investigative report containing allegations of sexual misconduct by Depardieu. Thirteen more women, including actresses, makeup artists, and production staff, shared their testimonies, primarily under anonymity. The allegations covered incidents that reportedly occurred during the filming of 11 films between 2004 and 2022. The report detailed accusations of inappropriate touching, verbal abuse, and harassment.
Notably, none of the 13 women who spoke to Mediapart had taken legal action against Depardieu by April, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. One of the testimonies came from a former extra who claimed that during the filming of “The Box” in 2015, Depardieu “put his hand under (her) dress” and “tried to get into (her) knickers.” Allegedly, when she resisted, he became “aggressive” and attempted to “push my knickers to one side to finger (her).”

The open letter from Depardieu serves as his vehement denial of all accusations against him. In it, he expressed his distress at the scrutiny he has faced and declared that he has “never ever abused a woman,” comparing such actions to “kicking the womb of my own mother.”
Despite the legal and public challenges, Depardieu recently made headlines by selling his collection of artwork at an auction in Paris, fetching €4 million ($4.2 million) according to French reports.
The legal battle and the allegations against Gerard Depardieu continue to captivate public attention, as the actor fights to clear his name amidst a tumultuous period in his career.
