The race for the 2024 Academy Awards is heating up with competition among outstanding films and filmmakers. In the Best Achievement in Cinematography category, the two standout candidates are Hoyte van Hoytema’s “Oppenheimer” and Erik Messerschmidt’s “Killer.”

Hoyte van Hoytema, who has collaborated with director Christopher Nolan on many projects, notably “Dunkirk,” “Interstellar,” and “Tenet,” was honored with Variety’s Creative Impact in Cinematography award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. This put him in the lead in the Oscar race.

However, the competition is not gentle. Erik Messerschmidt, who won this year for Neon’s “Ferrari” and Netflix’s “The Killer,” is also a strong contender in the race. Along with that, a list of other excellent filmmakers such as Rodrigo Prieto, Łukasz Żal, and many other famous names also joined the race.
With a series of big names and notable films on the candidate list, the race will be dramatic and unpredictable. The Oscar competition always depends on many factors, from the quality of the film to the promotional campaign and the support of filmmakers and commentators. Awards season will continue to drag on, with the submission deadline on November 18, 2023, and fans will have to wait until March 10, 2024 to find out the results at the 96th Academy Awards.
