The movie draws its title and themes from Ernest Hemingway’s 1927 short story of the same name. Hemingway’s story was a satirical take on the lives of hitmen while also delving into deeper themes of death, friendship, and the meaning of life. It has since become a literary classic frequently featured in short story anthologies.
This anthology film, currently in advanced production stages, consists of six short films by Korean directors, all inspired by Hemingway’s story. The directors involved include Lee Myung-Se (“M,” “Duelist,” “Nowhere to Hide”), Chang Hang-jun (“Rebound,” “Forgotten”), Kim Jong-kwan (“Josée,” “The Table”), Roh Deok (known for the TV series “Glitch” and “Very Ordinary Couple”), Sung Cho, and Yunyu.
Principal photography is expected to wrap up by the end of October. The film is presented by Studio Bill and produced by Biginsquare and Production M, with Showbox handling global sales. Showbox noted that in the film, “The killers are not only a reference to a person who kills but also function as a metaphor.”
In addition to “The Killers,” Showbox has recently included “Big Deal” in its slate, a drama film that explores the near-death experience of a leading soju company during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Directed by Choi Yun-jin, the film stars Yoo Hai-jin and Lee Je-hoon.
Showbox’s sales slate also features headline titles like “Because I Hate Korea,” which served as the opening film of the Busan festival, and “Exhuma,” a mystery-horror film starring acting legend Choi Min-sik. Directed by Jang Jae-hyun and co-starring Kim Go-eun and Yoo Ha-jin, “Exhuma” is generating buzz.
Additionally, two more titles from Showbox play in the Korean Cinema Today – Panorama section at the Busan festival. “Ms. Apocalypse” is a story about an unloved female detective and her secret crush, directed by Lim Sun-ae. Meanwhile, “Ransomed” is an action drama centered around a financial courier who is kidnapped in Lebanon and the diplomat sent to rescue him, directed by Kim Seong-hun and released commercially in August.
