Tom Hanks Says He Could Keep Acting After Death Because of AI and Deepfakes: ‘Anybody Can Recreate Themselves at Any Age’

September 14, 2023 September 14, 2023 admin

In a recent discussion on “The Adam Buxton Podcast” (via BBC), Tom Hanks offered a thought-provoking perspective on the future of an actor’s career, suggesting that death may no longer be the end, thanks to the rise of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. This intriguing concept comes to life at the Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” a film that utilized AI to de-age Harrison Ford, transforming him back to his 1981 “Raiders of the Lost Ark” appearance.

Hanks reflected on this technological evolution, recalling, “The first time we delved into a movie where a significant amount of our personal data, essentially our visual identity, was locked inside a computer, was with ‘The Polar Express’ in 2004.” He noted, “We saw this trend emerging, the ability to convert binary code from a computer into a human face and character. Since then, this capability has grown exponentially, and we encounter it everywhere.”

With AI and deepfake technology, Hanks envisions a future where he can pitch multiple film projects, portraying himself at the age of 32 or any other age he desires. What’s remarkable is that even in the event of his passing, his performances could endure.

“Anybody can now recreate themselves at any age through AI or deepfake technology,” Hanks asserted. “I could be hit by a bus tomorrow, and that could be the end of me, but performances can continue indefinitely. To the observer unfamiliar with AI and deepfake, there may be no discernible difference; it will seem as if it’s me and me alone. It will possess a lifelike quality. This presents both an artistic challenge and a legal one.”

Hanks mentioned that discussions are already underway among various industry entities—guilds, agencies, and legal firms—concerning “the legal implications of my face, my voice, and everyone else’s becoming our intellectual property.”

He continued, “Certainly, some people will be able to distinguish that it’s AI, but the real question is, will they even care? There will be those who don’t make that distinction.”

In the case of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” AI played a pivotal role in extracting still images of Harrison Ford’s face from his extensive filmography, which were then used to create his rejuvenated, de-aged appearance on screen.
